Diatom Paleolimnology Data Cooperative

Autecological Data

The Diatom Paleolimnology Data Cooperative (DPDC) is a web-accessible database of diatom and associated ecological and paleolimnological data relevant to study of global change. It contains data on regional surface-sample calibration sets (counts, water chemistry, inference models), sediment cores (counts, dating information, and diatom inferred characteristics), and other types of samples. It is intended for researchers needing data on long-term trends in variables related to global change, and diatomists involved with creating those data. Initial emphasis has been on data sets providing information on salinity, lake level, hydrology, trophic state, pH, and other factors that can be related to climate change, acidic deposition and eutrophication.

At this site you can:

  • Browse and download stratigraphic and calibration data sets (counts, inferred environmental data, water chemistry)
  • View individual diatom counts
  • Search for all occurrences of an individual taxa among all data sets; view and download their abundances and corresponding environmental data

The best way to understand the features of the DPDC is to browse the webpage and read the instructions for performing searches and downloading data. In the future we plan to increase the kinds and format of data that can be retrieved. We also plan to increase the flexibility of searching and “data set” generation.

We are accepting diatom core and surface sediment data for admission to the DPDC and invite researchers to cooperate in this effort. The success of this effort depends on the voluntary submissions of the diatom paleoecology community!

Any publications that use data obtained from this website should cite the contributors’ original publications describing their data.

Creation of the DPDC was funded by the NOAA Paleoclimatology Program and the NSF Earth System History Program which are both research initiatives of the U.S. Global Change Research Program (USGCRP). It was also supported by staff of the World Data Center for Paleoclimatology at the National Climatic Data Center in Boulder, Co.
